DMEXCO is the must-attend conference for industry professionals who want to discover new ways of engaging customers. Delegates flock to Cologne in Germany every September to be inspired by innovative content across keynote presentations, workshops, networking opportunities, and more.
We’re pro DMEXCOers and with the event just a few weeks away, we’ve decided to share our top tips on how to make DMEXCO a fruitful expo/conference for you and your brand.
1. Get social now!
Many people prefer to see where the day takes them and network on the fly. However, folk new to DMEXCO don’t realise just how large the Koelnmesse centre really is. Whilst you’ll inevitably meet people at the event, it’s a good idea to join DMEXCO 2018 social media groups (e.g. LinkedIn) prior to attending. This means that you can make connections and book meetings in before you’ve even arrived at the airport. Attendees tend to get booked up ahead of the event, so reach out to your prospects and vendors now to avoid disappointments!
2. Travel the city like a boss
Once you have arrived in Cologne, you need to get from the airport to your hotel. Simple and stress-free, right? Not necessarily. If you are using public transport, keep in mind the following considerations:
- Trains > Buy your tickets in advance from Deutsche Bahn. If you are purchasing your ticket upon arrival, be sure to validate it shortly before travelling to avoid a hefty fine from the ticket conductors – you will see them… trust us! You can usually find a validation machine on every platform.
- Taxi > Use an app or be prepared for extensive queues. As well as holidaymakers, you’ll be travelling among hundreds of other attendees. That being said, standing in line for a taxi can be surprisingly productive if you strike up a conversation with fellow delegates!
- Bus > Download an app such as Citymapper with real-time updates to guide you on transport routes to your hotel.
3. No one likes a grump
Get plenty of rest the night before DMEXCO because your day will most likely run from Wednesday morning to the early hours of Thursday. The rumours you’ve heard are true: not everything is about digital marketing content at DMEXCO. After all, the expo and conference is held in Cologne – a city that boasts its own type of beer, known as Kölsch. While presentations and meetings will take up your day, the nighttime is for merriment. Official and unofficial parties in Cologne are plentiful and can help you further connect with that new prospect or partner. Consider preparing a recovery kit for Thursday to help you get ready for round two.
4. Sequels can be as good as the original
Be sure to not arrange any meetings with anyone too early in the morning on the second day of DMEXCO. Failing to do so would be a classic rookie mistake. As you can imagine, you and your fellow delegates might be feeling a bit tired – and will likely need a couple more hours in the morning to fully recover from the exhausting first day.
5. Slip into their DMs as soon as possible
After you’ve packed your suitcase and you’re on the road back home, be sure to reach out to all of the connections you’ve made via professional social media. Don’t be afraid to look too eager: if you aren’t too busy mingling during the event, it might be a good idea to get a head start and add them on the go – so you beat any other potential ‘suitor’.
6. Book your travel to DMEXCO 2019 straight away
DMEXCO organisers tend to announce the following year’s dates as you’re leaving the city on the Rhine after the event officially closes. If you found the event worthy of your time and budget, make sure you book your attendance as soon as you’re back in the office. As you know, travel and accommodation during DMEXCO are expensive. It’s a good idea to search for flight and hotel package deals. You’ll end up saving a few pennies, finding quality accommodation, and eliminating any pre-travel stress by having all your bookings in one place.
